Lesson #2: Jon's Marketing Case Study (AKA Help I Haven't Gotten Any Customers Yet!)
So first watch the video- and then come back here to read the text 🙂
Here is the email as mentioned that ignited me to make this video:
"Hey Zachary, big fan of the channel and your course! I started my own business in April - A.C. Lawn Care in Lawrence, KS. The population in my town is close to 100,000. This is a small number compared to where you did yard work. Any tips to overcome selling challenges in a city with a smaller population?
I have about 6 recurring customers, I'm on nextdoor, Google with 5 5-star reviews, Craigslist, and I have truck magnets on the way. I naturally feel discouraged as business has been slow this May. While I'm waiting to get new cards and a sandwich board do you have any tips that could help me out? I'm just really not tryna get another job until winter.
I'm good at this, and I know I can succeed I just don't know exactly how it's going to happen yet. Thanks for your time sir I hope you're enjoying life abroad."
(*And here was my response- including the checklist! I had a rough checklist in the previous video- but this one is now updated and condensed down 👍)
"Hey Aden! Good morning brother- sure let's dive into this and see what else we can adjust/modify 😎
So I just sent this to someone else literally 5 minutes ago, I'll copy and paste it so you can take a look!
- 1) Post on craigslist 1-2x/week depending on how many other people are posting in your area! If there's lots, maybe even post 2-3x throughout the week. Change the titles around, and make sure to copy the same format I showed in the course for craigslist.
- 2) Set up your free google listing and get it verified. Once it's verified, begin getting literally everyone you know friends family customers to begin leaving you 5 star reviews ASAP (extremely critical, this will be the biggest catalyst for your business growth)
- 3) Finish setting up your google adwords ads, and set it to $5/day
- 4) Get your logo made on Fiverr, then take it to vistaprint and design your cards & magnets & sandwich board. Order those ASAP. Pass out 100's of cards a week to houses in your area (literally, this is also a gigantic catalyst), wear your magnets 24/7, and put the sandwich board out everytime you mow a yard
- 5) List yourself on Yelt & Angies List (both free)
- 6) Make a facebook account for your profile, and begin posting inside local community groups about your new business and services! (Inside the facebook lesson, you will see a link showing exactly the types of groups to aim for)
- 7) Download the nextdoor app, and see if there is a spot for you to take and pay monthly to advertise on there (also a lesson on this)
- 8) Go to the store and buy some $6-$7 plastic yard signs, and write "Lawn Care $40+ and your phone number" on it and put them around your area
- 9) A temporary option as well- download the LawnStarter & GreenPal apps and get some customers from there! If they're good, take them off the app and begin working with them directly and cut the app out of the equation.
You are doing a lot of these, but I included a bit more detail on budgets/intensity.
You are in a smaller town yes- but as we know you really only need 40-50~ customers give or take to make this full time living of slicing and dicing work! You have 6 which is great (he only had one customer so far but he also just barely started), so if you can get 6 you can get 16 which means you can get 60. It just takes more/less time to land them all, but as long as you don't give up and keep your head up vs down when obstacles arise, then you will make it happen.
I attached a pic, it's so cheesy but it's so true as well. Maybe put it on your door/fridge or make it the background of your phone for now lol 🙂
Again- keep in mind the initial marketing stages will likely be the most work you put in, and the biggest hump you overcome! BUT, as a business owner the best quality to have is just being a problem solver and having the ability to analyze and adjust when things aren't going your way just yet. If what you're doing now isn't working- that's ok! Let's see what you WERE and WEREN'T doing, and adjust and give it another swing :) Eventually, as long as we don't stop swinging we WILL hit the home run!
So from here, tell me your thoughts and apply some of these new methods and remember the frame of this part of the business. Mowing is easy, buying equipment is easy, getting paid is easy- but getting the phone to ring is more technical! So let's treat it as a technical objective and give it time for us to collect data, analyze, and adjust. Today is Monday, so we have one week to apply the new methods and by Sunday let's see what the new data says!
Yw and ty Aden, let me know if you want to go over anything else. And yessir CR is awesome lol! :)
So that is the basic marketing checklist that I want you to put into action IF you're not getting enough callers from the methods you are currently doing! Feel free to write it down on paper, or just copy & paste to print it out and put ✅'s once you knock them out. Do it for a full week, and let me know the results!
Sometimes it can take MORE/LESS time for your phone to begin ringing due to so many factors (your city, the competition, the time of year, etc.)... but again- the phone WILL ring as long as we continue putting attention & effort into finding your sweet spot for all the advertising methods.
That being said, if you're going one week without a single phone call, email me asap so we can get to the bottom of it 🙂
Now, let me show the progress of another fellow member who was having "trouble" at first- but vs. putting his head down and being bummed, he picked himself up, brushed himself off, and treated the lack of callers like any other obstacle we would & WILL face as the owners of our operation! This little storyline has happened countless times in the group of someone posting "I'm not receiving callers yet", and then once readjusting they are able to now get the phone to begin ringing!
Stage 1: Excitement!
He's ordered his graphics and set all his online ads... now the phone will automatically be ringing with no further adjustments/attention needed right?
Stage 2: I did everything right... but am not landing any customers!
(Look at the dates, it's only been 2 days since setting all his marketing methods which is NOT a lot of time in the grand scheme of things) BUT- I want my members to be happy! So we decided to add in a method that he wasn't doing because other members were having good success with fb group postings)
and then....
Stage 3: SUCCESS! Landed his first customer 👍 A new $140/month ($35 per visit) weekly mowing customer!
(Also take note of the timing... this is literally 4 HOURS after his last post!) Again, it might take more or less time just depending on so many factors and it is unpredictable! But look what happens when you add more marketing methods to your existing methods and give it just a bit more time... vs bumming out and giving up
Here is a snippet to the video clip so you can see the triumph in his eyes + hear him talk about the client!)
Stage 4: His momentum is rolling, and now the work is beginning to pour in 👍
Versus scrambling for new customers & trying to make the phone ring, the focus has slowly adjusted into maintaining all his new properties & trying to get help on pricing these new callers!
🌱✂️💰
So that is a little case study for in case you run into this same common obstacle of not getting customers calling right off the back! This won't be the first (or the last) potential challenge you run into- so use this same methodology to overcome anything that comes your way in the future 🙂
Keep in mind, since we are doing this solo- we will get to reap ALL the fruits of our labor... and subsequently we will also have to deal hands-on with EVERY challenge that comes our way. This is why having your mind right & ready for challenges is so key. We can't just expect to have our cake & eat it too, we just earn every ounce of our success and as always- every failure is just one step closer to the solution :) If business was easy- then everyone would be doing it! That being said, you can train this muscle by always keeping yourself grounded in the only ways personal to yourself that you know how. Take care of your mind, body, and brain- and navigating your business will be simple & you will find what you need to do. Add me & the community to that equation, and it's a done deal 💰😎
As always if you have any questions- just let me know

*STICK AROUND UNTIL TOMORROW- and I'll fill you in on my complete solo lawn care online course as well!
